Calling all students of Wayne Hajos, Karen Ward and Colette Kalvesmaki!
‘Meet the Artist Night’ will be held for all of you October 29th, 5:30-8 pm.
The Center for Byzantine Material Arts is hosting our first Student Icon Exhibit which can include other icons and drawings of icons you have done since our instruction (all items entered must line up with the Center’s mission).
Deadline for entry: Oct 1st
We ask that everyone fill out the paperwork which will be sent upon request and send back with photos of your work and entry fee.
Cost:$25 to enter up to 3 icons and $25 to enter up to 3 more and so on for processing. This is a donation and tax deductible. Please send paperwork and check to CBMA, 716 Monroe St NE #7, Washington DC 20007, drop it by the studio.
We need all your works at the studio by Oct 11th before 7 pm. Volunteers to help hang would be most welcome!
Pick-up: You can pick up your items anytime after the show concludes and when we are open after Dec 30th, but all must be picked up by Jan 9th, unless other arrangements have been made. All payments will be made to artisans by Jan 10th.
All art work can be brought to the same location, with your name on the back of the piece and hanging ready.
For sales the Center asks 25% of the sales on top of entry fee, although not all pieces need to be for sale.
Included in the paperwork, we will need a short bio on each participant (small paragraph), names of each piece, medium, size and cost. We will have fliers for all participants to give to friends, family and churches. Make sure they are hanging ready.

September 1st, at 6 pm First Friday Lecture Series: a special showing of the Andre Rublev movie “Andre Rublev” by Tarkovsky. $10 donation.
September 23–24; Sat.10am–4pm, Sun 1-6: Encaustic/Wax Course of the Sinai Pantocrator—Two intensive days using a cold wax method. No gilding possible during the workshop, but we can set up a special gilding day after. Course taught by Colette Kalvesmaki. $300 + $30 (supplies).
September 30th Drawing II Course with Karen Ward. Friday 10-4 Cost: $130

October 27, Friday at 5:30–8pm: Student Exhibition Reception—A special reception will be held to honor our first student icon exhibit. Invite your friends, neighbors, church members, co-workers and family!
October 28, Saturday at 10am–1pm: Beginning Gilding Course—Join us for four hours of instruction learning the various types of gilding used in Iconography and other contexts. $135. Course taught by Colette Kalvesmaki.
November 3rd, 7pm. First Friday lecture by a scholar or artist. Suggested donation: $10
November 4th, Sat. 10am: Dumbarton Oaks Behind the Exhibit—An exclusive invitation by Dumbarton Oaks to go behind the scenes to see and handle their artifacts, not normally seen by the public This is a continuation of the Ivory Lecture held at CBMA by Dr. Gudrun Buehl; Head Curator of Dumbarton Oaks Museum Collections. Maximum of 10 students. Suggested donation: $25. Sign up now!
